Grand Rapids Michigan is a diverse metropolitan area comprised of

many local cities and communities that surround the city of

Grand Rapids.  The Grand Rapids metro area is the second largest

“city” in Michigan with a population around 1 million.

West Michigan is a beautiful 4 season area of Michigan that has lots

of hardwood forests, rolling hills, Lake Michigan shoreline, hundreds

of  lakes and rivers, and a thriving, diverse work environment with

educated workers.  We have 25 colleges and universities in our

area, including the new Michigan State Medical School on the

“Medical Mile” in downtown Grand Rapids with a student population

of around 32,000+ students.

Getting To Know Grand Rapids:

Since pictures speak louder than words, we have links to photos

& videos of some of our local communities:

Ada Michigan is a small community southeast of Grand Rapids with

an excellent school system and lots of suburban homes.

Caledonia Michigan is a small suburban community that has farms

and a rural setting.

East Grand Rapids is a city bordering on Grand Rapids that has

lovely older homes, an excellent school system, and excellent city services,

including community events, and over 100 miles of plowed city

sidewalks in the winter.

Kentwood Michigan is a suburban community southeast of Grand

Rapids with businesses, such as Steelcase, one of the nation’s largest

office furniture manufacturers and lots of suburban housing subdivisions,

both new and established, plus rental communities for housing options.

Lowell Michigan is a small community east of Grand Rapids with a

vibrant business community, excellent school system, and a mixture of

older homes and newer subdivisions, all centered around the Flat River.

Rockford Michigan is a small community north of Grand Rapids

on the Rogue River.  It is home to the global shoe manufacturer, Wolverine

Worldwide [Merrell, Patagonia, Harley Davidson brands], but has a small

town feeling with unique boutiques, shops, and wonderful restaurants.

Many newer homes, established subdivisions and older homes populate

the Rockford area.

We took a few hours to browse the Art Prize venues yesterday, Thursday, Sept 24th, 2009 in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan.  We saw some fabulous pieces of artwork and we also some we just didn’t get.  I am sure it is the same for everyone, as we all see the world through our own private filter.

We took a few photos to share with those who won’t get a chance to see this art extravaganza in person.  Some of the artworks have to be seen in person to appreciate the scale and subtleties. some are in-your-face, some are really, really out there, and others are really just for fun.

We registered to vote, toured the Urban Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Blue Bridge, Cathedral Square, Rosa Parks Circle and the Waters Building. We had a  wonderful lunch at the Grand Rapids Art Museum’s Terrace Restaurant overlooking Rosa Parks Circle.  What a great spot to people watch and even had a few art prize entries stroll past.

We hope to get back to see a lot more artwork. With 159 venues and over 1200 artists, it is quite a task to see them all.  Hope you enjoy our tour!

Held at the Gerald R Ford Presidential Museum in downtown Grand Rapids Michigan

We attended the annual Public Town Hall Meeting that Vern Ehlers held at

Gerald R. Ford Museum on Saturday May 2nd, 2009.  We have a few video

clips of parts of the meeting and the beautiful water fountain outside of

the museum entrance.  The Grand River was at flood stage and the water

covers the sidewalk that is at the river’s edge.

This was an interesting hour spent among our peers discussing the items

we felt were important to us here in Grand Rapids.  Congressman Ehlers

gave us his thoughts and insight on many current topics.

We were disappointed to see less than 100 people out of a population of

over 660,000 that Rep. Ehlers Third District covers in Michigan.  Although

he was pleased to see that the crowd was bigger than normal.

The January Series is back at Calvin College this month. We have several

talks that we have attended already. Today, we have an offer we are

preparing and the wind chill is -18 Degrees. I decided to stay home and

listen live to the 1 hour presentation by film director, Robert Rooy, on

Microfinance – Changing lives in Poverty. Robert has filmed all over the

world for non-profits so they can tell their stories via film. He is an

accomplished director and donates his off time to helping non-profits film

in remote locations.

He recommends Kiva.org as a means to donate to microfinance small business

opportunities for poor people all over the planet. This system really works.

So I checked it out and I am now helping Mujeres Unidos Group in Peru.

I will get monthly updates on their progress, whether they pay the loan back

and just how it helps their lives. Ain’t the internet great?

You get to choose where your money goes, and you get updates on how

they are doing. Paypal makes the payment easy and safe.

Please go to Kiva.org and take a look. You can donate as little as $25.

You could make a difference in someone’s life today.

For the price of a lunch for the two of us, we can actually

help people rise out of poverty.
